While newer cocktails have hijacked the Metropolitan name, it is the classic brandy-based Metropolitan that best stands the test of time. Like the Martini is for gin, and the Manhattan is for whisky, the Metropolitan is all about quality ingredients and balance. A good Metropolitan lets the base brandy flavors and aroma shine. Sip away and feel classy with this following recipe.
Ingredients
- 60ml brandy (or cognac)
- 30ml sweet vermouth
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- Optional: 15ml simple syrup (though the recipe calls for it, we think without is sweet enough)
- Garnish: Maraschino cherry
Directions
- Fill mixing glass with ice, add in brandy, vermouth, bitters and syrup (optional), then stir well (using a shaker is fine too, especially if you’re adding in syrup, since the added dilution might be welcomed)
- Strain mixture into martini or coupe glass, garnish with cherry and serve
